We have:

Here at Courtlands we are animal lovers and in addition to all our horses we also care for many other breeds of animals. We are currently in the process of re-establishing some of the breeds we lost through the foot and mouth outbreak in 2001, along with a few extras.

We are rebuilding our pond which has been dormant for nearly 15years, as well as creating new enclosures for our other animals.

We soon hope to let all the visitors to Courtlands riding stables come and meet our new arrivals and have the chance to get up close and learn more about them. In the meantime we ask you to be patient while we are letting all them get used to their new homes and settle in, although you are welcome to watch them from the viewing area by the shop.

CHICKENS

We have 3 different breeds of chickens with a total of 10 hens and 1 cockerel.

Brahama Bantams

We have a trio of Brahama Bantam chickens. These are a laid back friendly breed who lay small eggs. The most distinctive feature of these birds is they have feathers feet. The cockerel has a fantastic gold and black plumage.

Orpington Hens

Orpington chickens hail from England, and are dual-purpose bird as they get large enough for meat purposes but also produce friendly hens that lay brown eggs in abundance. We currently have 6 Orpington hens in the coup.

Araucana Hens

We have two silver Araucana Hens. This breed differ from our other chickens because the hen lays blue shelled eggs. Apart from the blue Shells they are just like any other edible eggs.

Geese

We have 2 breeds of geese on our pond. There are 2 Embden geese and 2 Czech miniature geese. Each pair have a Male and a Female, who regularly lay large white eggs.

Ducks

The pond accommodates 4 breeds of ducks.

Abacot Ranges

We have a pair of Abacot Ranges - "Malcolm" and "Matilda". This is a popular breed for showing events as well as having a great temperment as pets.

Call Ducks

We have a trio of Call Ducks. They are described as having a head much rounder than the wild duck, rather like a tumbler pigeon. There are variants in colours of the breeds, our two males have the green head while the female has darker less striking markings.

Cherry Valley

We have a pair of Cherry Valley ducks at Courtlands. This breed are well mannered and lay plenty of eggs. The breed were originally raised commercially for their meat but they make great pets and have their own characteristics which make them unique. There are variants in colours of the breeds, our two are White, this is the most common colour.

Blue Indian Runners

We have a pair of runner Ducks - "India" & "Elvis". Few ducks have ever had such an impact on the domestic waterfowl scene in Great Britain as the Indian Runners. This breed differ from our other breeds by having long necks, much like geese but still having the classic duck bill.

Goats

Courtlands have 3 pigmy goats, one nanny goat (Daffodilly) with her kids, a girl and a boy (Bonnie and Clyde). All three have been handled regularly and are very well natured. They are more than happy running around with us and the other animals.

Pigs

We have two KuneKune pigs at Courtlands, "Pinky" and "Perky". These joined us in February and have already become a common site on the yard. The KuneKune breed are a small stocky pig, often referred to as a miniature breed but they grow to 60 - 70cm high and about a metre long.

Donkeys

We have had our two donkeys for nearly 5 years. they can be found causing mayhem all around the yard. we have recently rebuilt their stable after they got bored and ate it. They crave attention and are really friendly, but mind your fingers, they do like to have a nibble!

Dogs

Courtlands is home to 3 dogs, Poppy (Labrador), Bubbles (miniature Poodle) and Choco (Labradoodle). All three are a common sight on the yard and always demand attention from those that walk by.

In addition to the the dogs who live on the yard you may also see another three who are a common sight here at courtlands. Muttley (Cairn Terrier), Scooby (Labrador) and JD (Jack Russell, Terrier Cross) are owned by Jo-Anne and Martin and spend most their time causing trouble at the bottom of the yard.

Cats

We have 3 cats that commonly frequent the yard. Our fluffy black cat is rarely seen but does a good job of controlling our mice. The other two are a lot more domesticated and can often be found hiding out in the feed shed waiting to clear up the left overs. Amazingly these two can often be see on the yard playing with the dogs!

Although every care is taken, all riders ride at their own risk.
